Monitoring of atmospheric air pollutants from anthropogenic and natural sources in Tenerife, Canary Islands

Air pollution monitoring is one of the most pressing environmental problems today. The selected student for this programme will perform field and lab work related to

  • monitoring of SO2 and NO2 emission rates from refinery and power plants by means mini-DOAS measurements in mobile-terrestrial position
  • monitoring of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the air and
  • monitoring indoor air quality.

Field and lab work will take place on a daily basis. During this programme the selected the student will learn how to:

  • use Optical Remote Sensing (COSPEC & miniDOAS) to perform SO2 and NO2 emission measurements
  • perform in-situ SO2 and NO2 emission measurements from refinery and power plants in mobile-terrestrial position
  • collect air samples for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • perform analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) using a GCMSMS
  • perform indoor air radon measurements using alfa-spectrometry
