Hydrogeochemical and soil CO2 efflux monitoring in La Palma, Canary Islands

The selected student for this programme will perform field and lab work related to the hydrogeochemical and soil CO2 efflux monitoring survey for volcanic surveillance at La Palma, Canary Islands. Please note students on this programme will spend all month on La Palma (although you will fly into and depart from Tenerife for the welcome lecture and graduation, and we organise your transfer to the neighbouring island as part of your programme).
The student will weekly perform field and lab work at La Palma Island. During this programme the student will learn how to:

  • perform in-situ pH, temperature, conductivity and radon measurements in ground waters
  • collect groundwater samples to analyse major, minor and trace components
  • collect groundwater samples for chemical and isotopic analysis of dissolved gases
  • perform soil CO2 flux measurements by means of alkaline traps.
  • perform chemical analysis of dissolved gases of the collected groundwater samples by means of micro-chromatography (microGC) and quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS)
