Hydrogeochemical and soil CO2 efflux monitoring are fundamental activities of our geochemical monitoring programme for the volcanic surveillance of Cumbre Vieja volcano (La Palma), the most active volcano of the Canaries and where 7 of the 16 Canary Islands’ historical eruptions have occurred. The two most recent eruptions at Cumbre Vieja volcano took place in 1949 (San Juan eruption) and 1971 (Teneguía eruption).

The selected undergraduate student for this programme will collaborate with field and lab work related to INVOLCAN’s hydrogeochemical and soil CO2 efflux monitoring for volcanic surveillance at La Palma, Canary Islands. The student will perform weekly field and lab work on La Palma Island.

During this programme the student will learn how to:

  • perform in-situ pH, temperature, conductivity and radon measurements in groundwater
  • collect groundwater samples to analyse major, minor and trace components
  • collect groundwater samples for chemical and isotopic analysis of dissolved gases
  • perform soil CO2 flux measurements with alkaline traps
  • perform chemical analysis of dissolved gases of the collected ground water samples by means of micro-chromatography (microGC) and quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS)

The student on this programme will be transferred to La Palma for the whole month by GeoTenerife after their introductory weekend lectures and tour in Tenerife. They will be transferred back to Tenerife at the end for the farewell BBQ and graduation.
