Programme AUG1: Volcano Geochemical Monitoring on the Tenerife North–South Rift Zone (NSRZ) volcano (Canary Islands)

From July 28 to August 25, 2017 (days off July 29 and 30 as well as August 6, 13 and 20)
Number of positions available: 2 Undergraduate Students

Programme A

The two selected undergraduate students for this programme AUG1 will perform field and lab work related to the INVOLCAN’s diffuse volcanic degassing survey on Tenerife’s North–South Rift Zone (NSRZ) volcano. The field work will take place from July 31 to August 19. The lab work will take place at Tenerife from July 21 to 24.
Students will learn how to:
(a) perform in-situ soil CO2 efflux measurements
(b) collect soil gas samples for chemical and isotopic analysis
(c) apply statistical-graphical analysis on the diffuse CO2 degassing survey data
(d) estimate the total diffuse CO2 emission from Tenerife NSRZ volcano and the summit cone of Teide volcano using Gaussian simulations
(e) perform chemical analysis of the collected soil gas samples by means of micro-chromatography (micro GC) and quadrupole mass spectrometry (QMS)
(f) perform C isotopic analysis of the collected soil gas CO2 by means of Isotope-Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS)

To apply:

  • Send your CV along with a separate covering letter of application NO LATER THAN Friday 31 March 2017 to enquiries@geotenerife.com
  • Indicate the programme/s you are interested in using (e.g. JUN1 or AUG2).
  • Use just the phrase “2017 Applicant” in the subject line of your email.

Failure to adhere to this application procedure could result in your application not being considered. Interns must be available in Tenerife for the whole period they have applied for.

Physical fitness is an important requirement for our internships. Teide Summit Cone, for example, involves fieldwork at around 3000m of altitude, and La Palma requires hikes across the Volcano Route. If you do not have the stamina for long days out in the field, these internships are not for you!

Internship includes shared accommodation, transfers to your changing daily workplace and all lectures, GeoTenerife excursions and outings. Flights to/from Tenerife and food are not included.

The cost of the internship is £1450.

If your application is successful, payment is to be made in full to GeoTenerife within 7 days or your place will be offered on. We run a tight waiting list for this purpose, and by applying to the programme you accept these conditions. In addition, strict terms and conditions apply for our internship programme, and a copy is to be signed by the applicant AND their supervising university tutor or professor.

Why do we charge for your internships?

Our internships are a learning experience, across a range of disciplines. You will be taught, challenged and supported on a daily basis. The scientists you will be working with, usually on a 1:1 or at most a 1:2 basis, are from INVOLCAN, the well-respected Canarian Volcanology Institute. The head of the institute, Dr Nemesio Pérez, is a geochemist and world-authority on geothermal potential and volcano degassing. The institute actively monitors volcanoes around the globe and publishes papers on their research, often leading the field in their findings. You may have the opportunity to contribute and be named on one of them. 2016 interns were named on relevant abstracts at the AGU in San Francisco and EGU in Vienna.

Throughout your internship, you will receive feedback and guidance. This is an opportunity for you to sample a range of disciplines, and often helps young scientists to clarify which area they would like to concentrate on in future. It will also teach you real skills and techniques you will be able to take into the workplace.

The internship fee also covers all your accommodation and transfer costs (including to other islands for internships in La Palma or El Hierro). Flights to and from Tenerife are not included and are your responsibility.
