Environmental monitoring of methane (CH4) emissions to the atmosphere from landfills

Methane (CH4) is an important greenhouse gas: the total positive climate force attributed to CH4 over the last 150 years is 40% that of carbon dioxide.

Fugitive methane (CH4) emissions from landfills are significant global sources of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the fugitive methane (CH4) emission from a closed landfill in Tenerife.

The two selected students for this programme will perform field and lab work related to the Environmental Monitoring of Methane Emission from Landfills in the Canary Islands.

During this programme students will learn how to:

  1. perform in-situ surface landfill gas efflux measurements
  2. collect surface landfill gas samples for methane (CH4) analysis
  3. apply statistical-graphical analysis on the landfill methane (CH4) degassing survey data
  4. estimate the total diffuse methane (CH4) emission from landfills using Gaussian simulations
  5. perform chemical analysis of the collected surface landfill gas samples by means of micro-chromatography (microGC)

All GeoIntern students will receive the following SciComm training:

  • How to write in a lively, engaging way about science for articles in the media and blogs.
  • Producing a short video about your research and the research of others.
  • Essential skills in presenting in front of a camera and in front of a live audience.
  • How to use social media effectively to communicate about science/the environment.
  • Adapting your communication to different audiences.
