La Palma eruption update 26th November 2021: Activity from the vent opened on the 25th has stopped

La Palma eruption – 26th November 2021

Daily summary

After the changes to the eruption on the 25th, the emission points that opened to the south of the main cone ceased emitting in the early hours of the morning, however the emission point that opened on the morning of the 25th to the east of the main cone remains active and feeding the new flow to the SW of the main cone. This flow has moved through flows 10 and 11 to the south of the flow field and has affected the photovoltaic plant, Las Manchas cemetery and new buildings. Later in the day, a new eruptive focus opened up on the eastern flank of the main cone. Elsewhere, streams 4, 5 and 7 between La Laguna Mountain and Todoque Mountain, which feed the northern lava delta, continue to be active. Seismicity remained at levels similar to the 25th, reflecting a decreasing trend for the last week. 56 events were recorded, with a slightly lower proportion of intermediate (10-15 km depth) events to deep (30-45 km depth) events, reflecting a decrease in intermediate seismicity, and the day’s largest earthquake was a mbLg 3.5 event at 27 km depth.

Volcanic tremor remains low, whilst deformation now remains stable across the whole network except for a possible local deformation at the station nearest the volcano. Due to heavy rain, SO2 emissions could not be measured but to be estimated at a ‘high’ level (1,000-29,999 tons per day), and for the same reason the ash and gas plume height could not be reported. As a general trend however, satellite measurements imply current SO2 emissions are lower than the start of the eruption. Air quality was improved throughout the islands, with SO2 concentrations being good at all stations throughout the day, and PM10 levels being at good or reasonably good across all stations.

Notes: The size of the points represents the size of the earthquake, and the colour represents the depth. The map will also only show a certain number of points at once. For ease of use, we recommend you uncheck all dates and the satellite basemap from the legend in the top right, and inspect the earthquakes one day at a time.
