Urban seismology, Tenerife

The complex geology of Tenerife and its recent volcanic activity make the island vulnerable not only to the effects of a possible eruption but also from the ground shaking due to moderate earthquakes of volcanic and tectonic origin. This is especially true in urban areas where the high population density increases the severity of the seismic risk.

One of the most commonly used scientific tools for mitigating this risk is mapping the local amplification of seismic waves due to earthquakes, caused by local geological structures: so-called seismic microzonation.

Students involved in this programme will participate in the realization of a detailed map of seismic amplification in urban areas of Tenerife. The activity will consist, for about three quarters of the time, in deploying seismic stations in urban areas and preparing and managing the instrumentation.

The rest of the time will be devoted to training and data analysis.

Students will be trained through talks and hands-on activities on:

    1. Seismic wave propagation
    2. Surface wave dispersion analysis
    3. Seismic stations
    4. Analysis of seismic noise parameters
    5. Seismic microzonation and related software
    6. Earthquakes and seismic hazard

Students are required to possess a basic knowledge of calculus and have an affinity for mathematics and physics. Computer skills are highly recommended.

All GeoIntern students will receive the following SciComm training:

      • How to write in a lively, engaging way about science for articles in the media and blogs.
      • Producing a short video about your research and the research of others.
      • Essential skills in presenting in front of a camera and in front of a live audience.
      • How to use social media effectively to communicate about science/the environment.
      • Adapting your communication to different audiences.
