GeoTenerife Updates

  • GeoIntern 2025GeoTenerife’s Hydrocamp GeoIntern’s spent time in La Palma in collaboration we the EU Horizon funded GENESIS project. They assisted in researching underground water storage and infrastructure through both fieldwork and lab visits, in collaboration with IGME-CSIC, Consejo Insular de Aguas La Palma, CANARAGUA, AIM, La Palma Research Centre, and Comunidad de Aguas ‘Tenisca’.

Reconstruction

  • ASEPALMA asks for agricultural recovery fundsThe Association of Fruit Packing, Exporting, and Marketing Entities of La Palma (ASEPALMA) have obtained a commitment from the vice president of the Canary Islands to support the advance of promised agricultural recovery funds from the Spanish Government.
  • New website to monitor reconstruction progressLos Llanos de Aridane City Council has presented a new website for the public to be able to monitor the progress of reconstruction projects, including housing, roads, and more, through an interactive map. It can be viewed here, and shows the location and status of each project.
  • El Paso grants aid for new homesEl Paso City Council have allocated €153,000 to 51 affected people to help them draft projects for their new homes after losing their primary home in the 2021 eruption. The maximum amount is €3,000 per applicant, and the call is still open and can be accessed here.
  • Container homes re-used in Puerto NaosThe temporary container homes removed from Los Llanos will be re-used in Puerto Naos to house a gas monitoring centre next to the Puerto Naos school. Elsewhere, in Puerto Naos new authorisations mean 1,091 homes and 23 businesses now can return due to reduced CO2
  • Wooden housing plot used for permanent homesThe plot of land where temporary wooden houses were built for those affected will be used for the construction of permanent public housing, now that people have moved out and the houses are being removed.
  • Los Llanos submits reconstruction requirements to the stateLos Llanos City Council have submitted the second agreement for post-volcano reconstruction to the Spnaish Government’s Ministry of Territorial Policy, valued at €65 million. This is for the reconstruction of housing, roads and other public facilities.
  • INVOLCAN interview about La Palma geothermalIn an interview about the La Palma Geothermal project, Head of INVOLCAN Nemesio Pérez points out that the opportunity is unique and that the population should be able to accept and be proud of the project, if the benefits for energy security and sustainability are communicated well enough and the population are included in the project. A recent opinion article has also explored the potential of geothermal in the Canary Islands.
  • Puerto Naos School reopeningIt is hoped that Puerto Naos school will be able to reopen for the new school year for students, after being closed since the eruption in 2021.
  • 120 new homes in Los LlanosLos Llanos City Council are putting out a tender for the construction of 120 new social housing units, which will be available to both those affected by the volcano and those who having been waiting for social housing on the island for a long time period.

Aid

  • Cabildo demands Spanish Govt make reconstruction commitmentThe President of the Cabildo de La Palma Sergio Rodríguez has demanded the Spanish Govt. make firm commitments towards La Palma’s recovery. He claims the state owes the €100 million annual payment, alongside €39 million owed for contributions towards infrastructure recovery. The Spanish Govt. have also not yet re-approved the 60% income tax reduction, and have reduced the employment plan budget from €30 million to €12 million.

  • Canary Islands Government aid commitmentThe Canary Islands Government has reiterated its commitment to pay the €50 million in aid annually towards the reconstruction in La Palma up to and possibly beyond 2027, despite the Spanish Government failing their commitments to provide €100 million per year for reconstruction.

 

  • 60% income tax reduction demandThe Canary Islands Government have unanimously backed a motion to reinforce their commitment to La Palma’s recovery, which involves demanding the Spanish Government guarantee the continuation of the 60% income tax reduction for the island.
  • €700,000 for renewable energy systems The Cabildo de La Palma have announced two lines of grants, totaling €700,000 open until 13th August subsidizing renewable energy systems in homes affected by the volcano.
  • Aid for neighborhood associationsLos Llanos de Aridane City Council is offering aid for neighborhood associations in the municipality, up to a total of €50,000, for projects promoting ‘civic coexistence’ taking place in 2025.

Science

  • New underwater images of the lava deltasThe Canary Islands Ocean Platform (PLOCAN) has shared new images of the recovery of the sea around the lava deltas taken by I Love The World as part of a collaboration to study the evolution of the deltas.

Other updates

  • Volcano Law nearing approvalJonathan Felipe, a member of the Canary Islands Coalition for La Palma, announced that the “Volcano Law” is almost ready to be approved. The next steps will be a submission and vote for final approval in the Canarian Parliament later in the summer. It is said to offer a greater certainty and protection for residents.
  • Fund to increase flight connections to La PalmaCanary Islands Tourism has announced a flight development fund to restore 24 flight routes, the majority to La Palma to restore its connections following the eruption, after which many international routes were shut down.
  • New book about the eruptionA new book 85 Days. Tajogaite Volcano. Social Impact is being released by a retired secondary school teacher in La Palma, documenting the social impacts of the eruption through testimony of those affected.
