Increase in frequency and magnitude of earthquakes, but slight deflation near the eruptive centre
Red traffic light
Earthquake magnitudes, intensity, and quantity increase and deflation of the eruptive centre is observed.
There has been an increase in earthquakes observed both in the number of earthquakes and in their magnitudes with respect to previous days. Since yesterday, 75 earthquakes have been located in the southern part of the island of La Palma. Seventeen of them were felt by the population, one of which had a maximum intensity value of III-IV (EMS). As in previous days, most of the seismicity is located 10-15 km deep. The mean amplitude of the volcanic tremor shows a slight progressive increase since yesterday morning. The column height measured at 7:30 UTC is 4,000 m, showing a slight descent of the eruptive cloud. The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations shows slight deflation in the vertical component of the stations near the eruptive centres (IGN, 2021).
