Protests in the 18th May speak out against the Canary Islands mass tourism model under the moto ‘Canarias Tiene Un Límite’. El evento no solo se vio en las Islas Canarias, sino también en la península ibérica y en Berlín, Alemania. En Valencia se reunieron unas 30 personas en solidaridad con el pueblo canario. Hasta ahora, los informes indican que casi 20 000 personas se movilizaron en Tenerife, varios cientos en Madrid y cientos recorrieron las calles de Santa Cruz de La Palma. Reports on the number of attendees at the 18M demonstrations has been conflicting. Earlier reports stated that 20,000 people were in attendance in Santa Cruz de Tenerife alone but according to the Government Delegation in the Canary Islands, 23,000 people joined throughout the archipelago. Tenerife had the highest participation rate with the National police reducing their estimates from 15,000 to 9,000 attendees. Organisations said that there were 40,000 people in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria but others report only 5,000. On the other islands, Lanzarote had 2,000, La Palma and Fuerteventura had 500 each, La Gomera had 100, and El Hierro had 90. These reports are vastly different from previous sources.

In the early morning of the 20th May, technical issues with the national telephone network resulted in difficulties calling 112. The Canarian government suggests in an emergency, call the emergency services directly.

They warn the government: ‘This change will happen with you or in spite of you, either you assume this reality or you will have to face your own political irrelevance with an increasingly clear social rejection’.
