Tenerife has more than 190 points of discharge into the sea, most without a valid permit. The Tenerife Association of Friends of Nature (ATAN) and local surfers have called a rally on the 25th May at 11:30am in Playa Honda, Las Americas, to protest against the constant sewage, chemicals, and sanitary waste on the beaches causing disease. They request public, frequent, accessible analyses be carried out on water quality, clear protocol for closure of contaminated beaches, urgent upgrades to wastewater infrastructure, and political accountability for lack of action.

La Asociación Tenerife Amigos de la Naturaleza (ATAN) y surfistas locales han convocado una concentración el 25 de mayo a las 11:30 h en Playa Honda, Las Américas, para protestar contra los constantes vertidos de aguas residuales, productos químicos y residuos sanitarios en las playas, que están provocando enfermedades. Piden que se realicen análisis públicos, frecuentes y accesibles de la calidad del agua, un protocolo claro para el cierre de las playas contaminadas, mejoras urgentes en las infraestructuras de aguas residuales y responsabilidad política por la falta de acción.

“When tourism income and the sector’s revenue are so high, but people don’t feel it results in well-being, then the model has failed. You have an economic model so that your people can live better; if the tourism income isn’t reaching the citizens — and it isn’t — then the model has failed. Therefore, it’s not about adding record figures to congratulate ourselves if they don’t end up benefiting the people, our businesses, our salaries, our farmers. Then they’re of no use to us. We must reflect on what’s happening. Not just reflect, but also examine whether this economic model — in which Tenerife is a leader And I believe we should feel proud, because when we become experts in something, we are very good at it — truly works. But the tourism income must stay in Tenerife and reach the people of Tenerife.

I’m absolutely aware of what I’m saying, I’m an economist. Fully aware. This reflection is for everyone. What we cannot do is fall behind. We cannot be the poorest region in Europe while tourism income benefits a few people who aren’t even here.

What this island certainly does not abstain from is lacking water, lacking territory, and having our natural spaces violated. We need to rethink things because we want tourism that contributes to profits and to the well-being of the general population.”

“Cuando las rentas del turismo y la facturación del sector es tan alta, pero la gente no percibe que redunda en un bienestar, entonces el modelo ha fallado. Tú tienes un modelo económico para que tu gente viva mejor, si las rentas del turismo no están llegando a los ciudadanos — y no están llegando — el modelo ha fallado. Por lo tanto no es cuestión de sumar cifras récord de las que congratularnos si no terminan repercutiendo en la gente, en nuestro comercio, en nuestros salarios, en nuestros agricultores. Entonces no nos sirven. Y habrá que reflexionar sobre lo que está pasando. No solamente reflexionar, sino ver si este modelo económico — en el que Tenerife es líder, y yo creo que tenemos que poder sentirnos orgullosos porque cuando somos expertos en algo somos muy buenos — pero las rentas del turismo se tienen que quedar en Tenerife y llegar a los tinerfeños y tenerfeñas.

Soy absolutamente consciente de lo que estoy diciendo, soy economista. Absolutamente consciente. Estas reflexión es para todo el mundo. Lo que no podemos es ir por detrás. No podemos ser la región más pobre de Europa cuando después la rentas del turismo beneficien unos pocas que ni siquiera están aquí.

A lo que sí, desde luego, no se abstiene esta isla es que nos falte agua, que nos falte territorio, que se vulneren nuestros espacios naturales. Habrá que darle una vuelta porque nosotros queremos un turismo que aporte a los beneficios y al bienestar de la ciudadanía en general.”
