StopSciBullying

WELCOME to the @StopSciBullying campaign led by GeoTenerife. BIENVENIDOS(AS) a la campaña @StopSciBullying liderada por GeoTenerife.

Over the last ten years, we have seen an increase in the number of informal reports we have been receiving from national and international students and colleagues we train and work with within the Canary Islands on scientific bullying of young scientists in the workplace. Academic bullying describes a range of behaviours that can have a heavy impact on young scientists at the start of their careers.

We have joined up with the Academic Parity movement in the USA to research the issue and report back. Our first objective is to quantify the size of the problem and to build on the work they have already done in the USA to give an international perspective.

🇬🇧🇺🇸

We are investigating the awareness and prevalence of bullying or intimidation in academic environments as a first step to helping to eradicate it.

We aim to uncover an issue that we believe is endemic in certain academic environments given our decade of experience working closely with Early Career Researchers from around the world and the informal testimony we have received over the years.

Please help us by filling out a short anonymous survey:

🇪🇸🇮🇨

What is academic bullying?

It is entirely possible that some behaviours are pervasive because of a lack of concrete information on the subject: if that is the case, highlighting the issue, its causes and impacts, could help to modify behaviours in certain settings.

The aim of this survey is to publish a comprehensive paper to build on the excellent work already carried out by the Academic Parity movement in the USA to analyse and report on the extent of the problem globally; and build a resource database which could be of assistance to those who are targets of this behaviour and provide recommendations for the future.

We would be grateful if you could fill in the survey here and circulate it to colleagues so that we can collate as much information as possible to inform our work. Please do fill it in even if you have not witnessed or been a target for this type of behaviour as it will help us to assess how pervasive it is. We would also be grateful if you could inform us of any resources or protocols you have implemented, used or witnessed that could help others in this situation.
