The Environmental Prosecutor for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Rafael Ruíz, has expressed his concern for the ‘pressure that natural spaces [like Teide National Park] are under’.
He calls the volume of visitors to Teide National Park as ‘overwhelming’. Ruíz has also been looking into six public officials for discharging sewage into the sea at Puerto de la Cruz. He hopes to stick up for not only the environment but the health of the people. The investigation’s existence highlights the need for stricter controls and regulations regarding waste management.
Rafael Ruíz also spoke on the increasing wildfires in the Canary Islands and acknowledged the great work being conducted to clean up and thin trees.

El fiscal de Medio Ambiente de la provincia de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Rafael Ruíz, ha expresado su preocupación por la «presión a la que están sometidos los espacios naturales [como el Parque Nacional del Teide]».
Califica el volumen de visitantes del Parque Nacional del Teide como «abrumador». Ruíz también ha estado investigando a seis funcionarios públicos por verter aguas residuales al mar en Puerto de la Cruz. Espera defender no solo el medio ambiente, sino también la salud de las personas. La existencia de la investigación pone de relieve la necesidad de controles y regulaciones más estrictos en materia de gestión de residuos.
Rafael Ruíz también se refirió al aumento de los incendios forestales en las Islas Canarias y reconoció la gran labor que se está realizando para limpiar y clarear los bosques.
