The US National Science Foundation (NSF) cancels funding for the 30m telescope (TMT) that was to be built in Hawaii. This places the La Palma Observatory as the best alternative. The TMT is one of the largest scientific infrastructures in the world. The NSF has assured it will instead be focusing on the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) which will be built in Chile. Hawaiian indigenous communities are pleased after voicing concerns over exploitation of Mauna Kea by astrophysicists.

La Fundación Nacional para la Ciencia (NSF) de Estados Unidos cancela la financiación del telescopio de 30 metros (TMT) que se iba a construir en Hawái. Esto convierte al Observatorio de La Palma en la mejor alternativa. El TMT es una de las infraestructuras científicas más grandes del mundo. La NSF ha asegurado que se centrará en el Gigant Telescopio Magallanes (GMT), que se construirá en Chile. Las comunidades indígenas hawaianas se muestran satisfechas tras expresar su preocupación por la explotación del Mauna Kea por parte de los astrofísicos.
