Cuna del Alma – Stop order and fine lifted for the Cuna del Alma project

Newspaper article

Cuna del Alma

The Canary Islands Government has lifted one of the three stop orders for the Cuna del Alma project. The Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment has revoked the stop order and the €110,000 fine imposed on the project. The stop order had previously been put in place due to construction starting without obtaining the required environmental impact assessment, as they only had a simplified evaluation.

“The decision to lift the stop order by the Agency for the Protection of the Natural Environment is justified on the grounds that the Adeje Council granted a license for the project, limiting the agency’s capacity to intervene. The agency rejects all arguments presented by the appellant except for the alleged violation of local autonomy, in this case, the Adeje City Council as the competent authority for approving the urbanisation project and appointing the environmental body for projects.”

  • Oscar Izquierdo, president of the Provincial Federation of Construction Entities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (FEPECO) accuses the demonstrations of being made up of people who ““only seek permanent debate, because a suitable topic will always come up, scrutinized precisely to waste time”.

  • The president of the Círculo de Empresarios de Gran Canaria, Agustín Manrique de Lara suggested implementing an eco-tax would be ” creating a figure that has more costs than the benefits it generates”.

Newspaper article

Stakeholder comment

The general manager of Spring Hotels, Miguel Villarroya Adell,  is concerned about the image that the demonstrations planned for the 20th of April will convey to tourists considering the economic dependence on the sector.  Villarroya suggests that the symptoms felt by the public are due to a lack of legislative control on the housing market and a lack of investment in infrastructure but also comments that demonstrating against the tourism model will not address these issues; “Let’s discuss the tourism model, there are solutions to put on the table, but let’s not play with the hand that feeds us.”
