Increased low magnitude and shallow earthquakes

Increased low magnitude and shallow earthquakes

Red traffic light

Increase in the number of seismic events

Renewed phreatomagmatic and strombolian activity

Data type: Geological report
Groups: Seismic activity – Earthquakes felt – Volcanic tremor – Volcanic tremor intensification pulses – Subsidence – Plume height – Volcanic cone measurement

Since the last statement, a total of 259 earthquakes have been located in the area, 14 of them felt by the population. 246 of these earthquakes are located at depths of 10-15 km and the rest (13) at depths of 20 km. The maximum recorded magnitude is 4.1 (mbLg) corresponding to today’s earthquake at 6:42 UTC, with a depth of 38 km. The amplitude of the tremor signal is kept low with intensification pulses. The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations does not show a clear trend in the deformation of the stations closest to the eruptive centres. In the rest of the stations, the slight deflation possibly related to deep seismicity has stabilized, except in LP01, which continues to register it. In view of the image calibrated at 08:45 UTC, a column height of 2,600 masl is estimated, and a scattering cloud in the south-southwest direction. The height of the cone is measured obtaining a value of 1,125 masl (IGN, 2021). The vents in the main cone were intermittently active today (GVP, 2021).

This video taken on the 30th of November shows intense strombolian activity at one of the youngest vents and an ash plume ascending from another vent. Sourced from IGME (2021).
