Why are we asking you to participate?
Whilst on La Palma reporting on the eruption and filming for our ‘Lava Bombs’ documentary, we spoke to many local people about their experiences of the eruption and how they had been affected. We found these diverse conversations to be enriching and invaluable to understanding the nuances and complexities to the impacts and responses relating to the eruption.
Whilst we understand the importance of a single narrative ‘voice’ in reporting the science and progress of the eruption, we believe that the opposite should be true when reporting the effects of the eruption on the population. The people and families impacted by this eruption do not just correspond to statistics of evacuated people, and neither do they correspond to a homogenous group to which ‘fix-all’ solutions can be applied to.
Rather, we believe each person affected by this eruption has a unique set of circumstances and experiences that shapes their responses to it and recording these is critically valuable for understanding the heterogeneity in the affected population. Furthermore, having publicly available records such as these available allows for these lived experiences to shape the legacy of the impact of this disaster on the population of La Palma, crucially in the words of those affected.
What are the aims of the project?
It is also hoped that these types of resources will help in the remembrance and preservation of the disaster for future generations, as well as building accountability and learning lessons that can be employed in future disasters.

¿Por qué te pedimos que participes?

Si bien entendemos la importancia de una sola “voz” narrativa al informar sobre la ciencia y el progreso de la erupción, creemos que lo contrario debería ser cierto al informar sobre los efectos de la erupción en la población. Las personas y familias impactadas por esta erupción no corresponden solo a las estadísticas de personas evacuadas, y tampoco corresponden a un grupo homogéneo al que se le pueden aplicar soluciones de “arreglarlo todo”.
Más bien, creemos que cada persona afectada por esta erupción tiene un conjunto único de circunstancias y experiencias que dan forma a sus respuestas y registrarlas es de vital importancia para comprender la heterogeneidad en la población afectada. Además, tener registros disponibles públicamente como estos permite que estas experiencias vividas configuren el legado del impacto de este desastre en la población de La Palma, de manera crucial en palabras de los afectados.
¿Cuáles son los objetivos del proyecto?
También se espera que este tipo de recursos ayuden a recordar y preservar el desastre para las generaciones futuras, así como a generar responsabilidad y aprender lecciones que puedan emplearse en futuros desastres.
