Thank you! We are over 1,000 sponsors helping to highlight the geology of Puertito de Adeje in Tenerife. Thanks to the "Adopt a Rock" project by @igme1849 we are now a thousand voices helping to bring attention to its internationally valued geology. In Puertito, there is a site of geological interest (LIG 4049 ) from the Spanish National Inventory of Geological Sites of Interest, with a HIGH protection priority. We worked with local and international experts in Puertito de Adeje over two years and submitted our report to IGME for consideration in summer 2024. We are grateful to them for including the deposits in Puertito de Adeje in the National Inventory of Sites of Geological Interest. You can show your support for their protection by signing up here: https://info.igme.es/ielig/LIGInfo.aspx?codigo=IC4049 It's free and quick.

III International #VULCANASymposium on Submarine volcanology and emergency management in the Canary Islands. 18th October 2024 FREE registration and OPEN for virtual delegates Organised by IEO-CSIC and GeoTenerife, on October 18, the “III International #VULCANASymposium” at the Canary Islands Oceanographic Center. This open and free-access symposium will bring together a prominent group of national and international experts in submarine volcanology. The event will also cover the latest scientific advances and challenges in volcanic emergency management in the Canary Islands, a critical focus for this type of research. The session will include a roundtable discussion where the challenges and opportunities faced by institutions in volcanic emergency management will be debated, providing a space for reflection to improve coordination between scientists, the authorities and communities.

The church charity Caritas has announced it has helped 3,400 victims of the eruption since it began in 2021. On the 3rd anniversary of the eruption, two marches took place organised by the Platform for Affected People containing hundreds of citizens, protesting against the reconstruction process on La Palma. IGN organises IAVCEI meeting in La Palma. La Palma waits for €100 million in aid guaranteed from the Government of Spain for 2024 for the reconstruction of the island which is yet to be transferred.

After several field campaigns, in association with a variety of experts and students, GeoTenerife has highlighted the geological importance of the outcrops in Puertito de Adeje. The Puertito de Adeje ignimbrites record a type of volcanic activity rare in oceanic islands and have one of the best outcrops of welded ignimbrites (associated with higher temperatures) of the Arico type: the Adeje ignimbrite. IGME have now recognised the high scientific value of the ignimbrites at Puertito de Adeje.

On the 13th August, the security protocol for CO2 emissions was activated for 42 homes in Puerto Naos. Media outlets have been criticised for seeding panic in local populations, as they incorrectly conflated the increase in CO2 emissions with a reactivation of the volcanic system. Cracks appear on the La Laguna Las Norias road suspected to have been caused by the heat, cooling, contraction and settling of the lava flows. Lava Bombs: The Reconstruction Documentary has been selected for the Hollywood Best Indie Film Awards.

GeoInterns undertake new research on La Palma – GeoTenerife’s annual GeoIntern Cohort spent July undertaking new collaborative research on Tenerife and La Palma with CSIC, IGN and the University of Florida. Furlough – The latest figures show that 212 workers from 96 companies remain on furlough following a disruption to their employment activities from the volcanic eruption. Cost of infrastructure reconstruction – The latest statistics from the Los Llanos de Aridane City Council show that the council estimates a total of €76 million is needed to recover just the affected infrastructure in the municipality.
